INVITATION TO ATTEND From Sam Magill, MCC
There are many well-known coaching skills and competencies that form the foundation for good coaching. We believe there is an additional competency for those coaches who know they must continually learn in order to reach and sustain mastery. That competency is Reflective Practice.
In today’s market, who would want to hire a coach who is only competent? Make yourself the incredible resource your clients want and you know you can be.
14 Credits in Core Competencies
WHAT IS REFLECTIVE PRACTICE?
Reflective Practice is an on-going discipline supported by specific skills, models and ways of noticing what is going on in us as coaches, in our clients, in our relationship with our clients and in the surrounding environment. It is both presence with clients and awareness inside the coach. More than reflecting on coaching sessions after the fact, our intention is to offer skills for reflecting In-Action. Navigating a canoe in white water, for example, requires a plan and skills developed in advance, but there is a subtle knowing-in-action and reflection on it in the moment that allows those skills to be applied real time with nimbleness and flexibility.
Coaching is no different. The here and now of coaching lasts a microsecond, yet it is the place of all possibility where we can notice with a fuller quality of awareness where changes may matter the most in the moment with the client. We call this fuller awareness Super-Vision.
When we use Reflective Practice, we can see from a multi-layered perspective and when we connect with what we are seeing from a plurality of senses, we have more opportunities to fine tune our interventions on behalf of our clients and to feel more resourced as coaches each and every time. Reflective practice allows a coach to tap into the full spectrum of their understanding, creativity and wisdom so that they can be more resourced than ever to serve their clients, especially in times of complexity and uncertainty.
