A Message from Janet Harvey, PSCA President · march 2008

Q1/2008 Membership Update Letter

Board Nominations Open

Are you looking for more community with coaches, an opportunity for leadership and a way to further our powerful profession?  We are excited to announce that we are opening nominations for PSCA Board of Directors for an April slate of candidates to be voted upon in a May election by the full membership. Our board principle of “inspired action with ease,” has manifested in both our process and our outcomes.  We have recently added two new board members who describe their experience as follows:

“My experience to date is that I am working with, collaborating with and teaming with a dynamic group of individuals with like-minded visions and goals. I get to play big, and as for moving our story forward, I’ve stepped up to co-chair the 2009 PSCA Regional Conference with the incredible Tammy Redmon.”  (Karen Steckler)

What I notice most is the invitation to get involved in a way the works for me and the organization….  I feel more connected to our chapter and recognize how important this group is.  I'm enjoying the opportunity to not only learn about the vision for our chapter but to be part of its creation.”  (Anya Jepsen)

If you are interested in joining our dynamic team, contact Janet Harvey or Jane Faulkner . We will share our desired board qualities with you and explore what inspires you to join us~ let’s talk!

Join Us At The First PSCA Regional Conference the Week of Feb 2nd 2009!

As coaches, we agree that it is imperative to build public awareness of the power of coaching for individuals, groups, companies and communities.  We also agree that we need to foster a community of learning to advance our knowledge and skills and to further the advancement of the coaching profession.

To that end, the PSCA in conjunction with other PNW regional ICF chapters is excited to announce the first of its kind regional Puget Sound Coaching Association Conference in Seattle the week of Feb. 2nd 2009 (stay tune for the exact date)!

We are designing the conference agenda to address 3 major imperatives:

1.       Launch a public campaign that will  drive on-going awareness of the power of coaching

2.       Create a learning community to further the advancement of our coaching skills

3.       Learn from our clients by bringing the consumers of coaching together with coaches to produce relevant, applicable solutions

In an effort to provide you with the MOST value for your time, effort and money we will be sending out a survey in the week of March 27th. In advance, thank you for taking the time to complete it!

Take Action – Get Involved!

There are 9 teams in place to build this event. We need team leaders and volunteers that have a passion for designing, building and making it happen. Please contact Tammy Redmon at or Karen Steckler for more information.

Regulatory/Legislative Update

As we near the end of the current Washington State legislative session, many of us are watching to see what happens with the counseling bill that has resurfaced this year. Those who agree with the official ICF stance that coaching is inherently separate and different from mental health counseling will be glad to learn that the Department of Health and key legislators also agree, and have never intended to regulate the kind of work that we do as mental health care. There remains some ambiguity in the definition of counseling as set forth in the current language, however this cannot be helped at this time because it is there to accommodate another group that has been quite vocal about being included in this legislation for reasons that have little to do with coaches.

Because there exists a great deal of political pressure to get this bill passed for the protection of those who are vulnerable to unscrupulous mental health care providers, we have chosen careful involvement and close monitoring as the most prudent course of action with regard to this proposed legislation, taking particular care to not engage in any activities that would be perceived as any attempt to derail the passage of this bill. Although some additional changes may yet occur in the language of this bill, it is currently in the final states of passage, with important cut-off dates coming up on March 3 and March 7 and the end of the regular legislative session on March 13, after which, we will have more information.
