Media Visibility· How to Get It, What to Do With It

Whether you go looking for coverage or a reporter tracks you down, being prepared means you'll have a chance to influence how the story is told. Help your cause by being a good interview, looking and sounding good, and avoiding common mistakes. Two former reporters provide key tips for dealing with the media:

Getting the attention you deserve

  • What is news
  • How to be newsworthy
  • Basics of press release writing
  • Pitching a story

Getting your point across

  • How to talk to a reporter
  • Getting your message across in a concise soundbite
  • Looking good on camera
  • What to do/what not to do in a radio interview

 Understanding the process

  • Objectivity -- myth or reality
  • Dealing with agendas (yours and theirs)
  • Turning a negative into a positive
  • Should you talk off-the-record
  • What to do when 60 Minutes/Dateline/20-20 show up at your doorstep

Register now  for this important opportunity to become more media-savvy just in time for the increased attention we expect to create and receive due to local and international efforts to draw attention to coaching!

About the Presenters

Michael Nesteroff is a former assignment editor and Emmy award-winning television journalist. He currently is a shareholder with the Seattle law firm, Lane Powell, P.C. Michael presents and writes on a number of topics, including media law issues. As a television reporter, Michael covered the 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens, a session of the Washington Legislature, and several high profile capital murder trials.

Kimm Viebrock, of Soaring Mountain Enterprises, is an ACC-credentialed professional coach and a former television weather anchor and environmental, science, and health reporter.

Michael and Kimm first met in the newsroom; they still regularly watch local television news and are not afraid to express strong opinions about the state of affairs in the industry.

More volunteers still needed for PSCA - we want to hear from you!
Please email us at volunteers@pugetsoundcoaches.org if you are:

  • Interested in meeting more people by greeting them at the door
  • Willing to register attendees at the beginning of the meeting.
  • Interested in displaying or practicing your facilitation skills by hosting a program meeting on a particular initiative topic.  In particular, we're looking for a facilitator for an upcoming meeting about legal and ethical risks in the coaching profession.
